harry bertoia. best known for his eponymous chair design, but it’s the sculptures that make me swoon. with names like ‘willow’ and ‘bronzed bush’, the works are beautifully lyrical and the welding workmanship flawless. primarily produced mid-twentieth century, bertoia sculptures are now mainly found at auction. want one? you’ll need to save your benjamins.

claude and francois-xavier lalanne pieces are definitely an acquired taste. surreal. tres bizarre. they’ll steal the thunder from the other pieces in the room. best known for sheep, lalanne furniture and sculpture celebrate the organic. all possess a certain chic je ne sais quoi. so…yes please, i would like a writing desk rhinoceros for the living room. thank you very much.

ah…the dutch. johannes vermeer. master painter of light and shadow. he, naturally, didn’t get much respect during his lifetime. circa 1665, girl with a pearl earring, his most famous work and masterpiece recently on view in nyc. i saw her…and she saw me…on her extreme left out of the corner of her eye. simply breathtaking. she thought so too. selfie!

philippe starck? i’m not a big fan. except for the coco mademoiselle chair. decidedly feminine and sexy. compact. she’s great at your desk or vanity. nice in pairs, too. black opaque or transparent frame and a variety of upholstery options to choose from. what’s best about her? the lady is unexpected, and adds a soupcon of whimsical sophistication to any space.
